SMR Schroeder-Manatee Ranch
Schroeder-Manatee Ranch (SMR) is the parent company and developer of Lakewood Ranch, Florida. John Schroeder, a wealthy business owner from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, came to Manatee County in the early 1900s. He began to purchase the land known today as the Schroeder-Manatee Ranch (SMR). An owner of furniture, turpentine, milling and lumber businesses, Schroeder appreciated the abundant natural resources and beauty of the land.
In 1922 the Uihlein family acquired the land and expanded agricultural operations. Cattle ranching, vegetable and citrus farming, timber, turf and shell mining are some of these businesses. The Uihlein family were part of the Joseph Schlitz Brewing Company, "The Beer that made Milwaukee famous".
The company was founded in 1922 and is based in Lakewood Ranch, Florida. Schroeder-Manatee Ranch, Inc. operates as a land management and agri-business company in Manatee and Sarasota counties.
Ranch activities included cattle ranching raising premium Brangus and hybrid cattle, citrus, tree and turf farming, and aggregate mining. The company produces and sells trees for the landscape industry as well as vegetables and timber.
SMR is also involved in growing and marketing turf for the golf course and athletic club industry and home lawns. The development arm operates a community that includes residential development, corporate business parks, recreation, medical, retail, and schools.
In 1922 the Uihlein family, founders of the Schlitz Brewing Company, acquired over 48 square miles of land east of I-75 in Manatee and Sarasota counties, at the southern reaches of the greater Tampa Bay area. The Uihleins pursued timber and ranching activities on the property creating what is today Schroeder-Manatee Ranch, Inc. (SMR). Over the intervening years, SMR has expanded to include the award-winning master-planned community of Lakewood Ranch, SMR Aggregates, The Sarasota Polo Club, and the diversified agricultural operations of SMR Farms (f/k/a SMR Turf & Trees).
SMR Farms is part of SMR and has more than 80 years of experience as a leader in Florida agribusiness. SMR Farms is a leader in environmental stewardship and water management. Whether it is preservation of sensitive habitat, extensive use of alternative water sources or implementation of Best Management Practices, SMR Farms has been well out front in making natural resource management a part of every land-management decision.
The continued rapid growth of Florida and the construction of Interstate 75 substantially increased the development potential of the area. SMR's board of directors decided to pursue creating a planned community for the land. A planned community, planned city, or planned town is any community that was carefully planned from its inception and is typically constructed on previously undeveloped land.
SMR transitioned into community development in February of 1994 and in 2020 Lakewood Ranch is home to over 36,000 residents and 16,000 jobs. The community features vibrant town centers, A-rated schools, the Lakewood Ranch Medical Center, Lakewood Ranch Golf & Country Club, Premier Sports Campus, and Sarasota Polo Club. SMR has preserved over 40% of the land for conservation and parks.
